Art exists to put us in contact with the great mystery that we long for, that we recognize in passing glimpses. The feeling that beauty gives is the ecstasy of being near the mystery.

Her work is passionate, reminiscent, beautifully painted and each piece has a sense of fullness, a completed story in of itself. I love it. There is a force going on.

about Julia

born 1963, in Boston.

raised in Paris.

lives and works in Big Sur, California.

Julia Ingersoll is an American painter with dual French/US nationality, based on the wild Big Sur coast in California, after 10 years living and working in Italy. Her paintings are made from direct observation, in the field. Not unlike a fine wine, they spring from the unique components of “terroir”, of both the inner and outer landscape. The light, the vision, the passion, and the classical tradition. Between the rugged California coast and the artistic atmosphere of Europe, Julia finds a nexus of inspiration and passion for her art and life, as though returned to the home of ancient memory, the heart's memory.

In addition to landscape, her production also includes still life, figure, watercolors, and drawings. Her work is in numerous private collections in the U.S. and Europe.

She is the rare, real-deal as a painter– there is such a well of emotion and passionate expression in each gesture and mark that you lay down on that canvas, it is stunning and exciting to see in contemporary work. People, even people who are classically trained and have moved somewhere else in their work, seem to forget the depth of value and importance of the figurative. It is so close to source when painted as you see it.
